Texarkana Twilight Tours offers a different historical perspective | Explore the Upper East Side of Texas
Join the Texarkana Museum System at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 for a guided walking tour of Rose Hill Cemetery. This tour includes living history performances at select burial sites as well as a discussion of historic burial customs and tombstone symbolism.
Texarkana’s most historic cemeteries date back to the founding of the city in the 1870s. Rose Hill Cemetery was one of the first cemeteries created for use by the earliest citizens of Texarkana and is the final resting place of some of the pioneer families in the region.
“Walking through this cemetery is like walking through the history of our city,” says TMS curator Jamie Simmons. “Their stories tell us how Texarkana was born and why our community grew the way it did.”
The tour will include an overview of historical burial practices and how these practices continue today, as well as a discussion of headstone design. Many of the oldest graves are marked with elaborately carved stones that incorporate symbols common to 19th century burials.
“Victorians loved symbolism,” says Simmons. “When you look at these tombstones, you will see all sorts of things carved in stone besides a name and a date. Doves, flowers, books, angels, all sorts of things. All of these things have meaning and tell you something very specific about the person buried there.
This is a walking tour, so participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and dress according to the weather. The tour route is suitable for wheelchairs. There is no parking lot in the cemetery. Tickets available at TexarkanaMuseums.org/Events.
