Saint-Etienne loses to Bergerac fans in the Coupe de France

Saint-Etienne’s struggling season took an even worse turn on Sunday as the top side were knocked out of the Coupe de France by amateur side Bergerac.

Fourth division Bergerac have reached the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time while six-time Cup winners Saint-Etienne return to their relegation battle.

The Greens have won a record 10 French league titles but are in last place and this humiliating exit will do nothing to lift their spirits.

Bergerac striker Romain Escarpit scored in the 76th minute after Saint-Etienne had missed chances, allowing Bergerac to join fellow fourth-tier side Versailles in the last eight.

Lens hosted Monaco later on Sunday in a top-flight contest.

Holder, Paris Saint-Germain is at home against Nice for the last place in the quarter-finals. PSG have won the trophy a record 14 times and are aiming for their eighth consecutive final.

But Nice coach Christophe Galtier will be confident of a surprise. Last season he guided Lille to the French title and that victory against the odds included a win at PSG.

PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Nice’s Amine Gouiri have been in fine form this season.

Mbappe has 19 goals and 13 assists in all competitions and Gouri has also done well in a smaller squad with 10-7 on aggregate.
