Cross Country opens the season with AFXC Classic

The Air Force Cross Country team, which included the 13th-ranked men’s team, kicks off the 2022 campaign this weekend, when it hosts the AFXC Classic on Friday, September 2. The meet, which will take place at Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs, is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. (MT).

DIRECTIONS

Spectators driving from the Academy to Monument Valley Park should take I-25 south to Fillmore Street (exit 145). After exiting the freeway, turn left on W. Fillmore Street, right on N. Cascade Ave, and right on E. Fontenaro Street. The car park is located along Fontenaro Street and the northern play area is located down the hill.

MEN RANKED 13TH IN USTFCCCA PRE-SEASON POLL

The Air Force Men received a No. 13 ranking in the preseason edition of the USTFCCCA National Coaches Survey, which was released Aug. 31. since 2004. It’s the sixth consecutive year that men have been mentioned in the season-opening poll – and the 39th consecutive week overall.

MEN CHOSEN AS MOUNTAIN WEST PRESEASON FAVORITES

The men, winners of back-to-back conference titles, were selected as Mountain West’s preseason favorite in its annual preseason coaches poll Aug. 24. The Falcons accounted for seven of nine votes for first place and 63 points overall. On the women’s side, Air Force was chosen to finish fourth with 71 points.

LOOK WHO’S BACK

With the return of Luc Combes, Sam Gilman, ryan johnson, Scott House, Sean Houseand Ethan Marshall, the Air Force is bringing back six of its eight all-conference runners from last season’s Mountain West championship team — a roster that also led the Air Force to a 17th-place finish at the NCAA cross country championships. On the women’s side, the Falcons are bringing back four of their five scoring runners — and nine of their 10 conference competitors, including Hamilton Hallthe 2021 MW Rookie of the Year.

The Falcons are led by eight seniors in 2022, including Aidan Boyle, Maddie Edwards, Niko Fraser, Sam Gilman, Stephanie Gregersen, ryan johnson, Scott Houseand Ethan Marshall.

WELCOME IN THE TEAM

The Air Force added nine men and six women to its roster for the 2022 season with the addition of Will Allen, Ethan Ashley, Zach Ayers, Grace Dailey, Ricky Fetterolf, Jadyn Heil, Ashton Higgerson, India Jones, Gina K Lee, Tanner Lindahl, Brenton Maddox, Jayden Nats, Max Sanes, Ben Scheller and Beatrice Shea.

BROTHERLY LOVE

The Air Force men have two siblings on their 2022 roster, including twins Maison (Scott House, Sean House) and the Scheller brothers (Ben Scheller, Nick Scheller). The Falcons are no stranger to multiple sibling groups on the roster, like ryan johnson spent two years racing with older brother Scott and current volunteer coach 2Lt AJ Kedge raced for three years with his older brother Aric.

THE NEXT COURSE

The Air Force resumes action Saturday, Sept. 17, when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., for the annual Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational at Mahoney Golf Course.
