The Twickenham crowd were unsure whether to dance or cry. Should they join Manu Tuilagi in saluting Freed from Desire or hold their heads in their hands with Henry Slade? There were 71 minutes of frustration, nine minutes of elation and a final second of despair.

After one of the worst performances of Eddie Jones’ tenure, England pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in Twickenham history. Three tries in minutes changed the mood from a funeral to a festival, with Will Stuart becoming the unlikely hero.

The prop’s quick tries had the All Blacks on the ropes. New Zealand were down to 14 in the final game and England had a chance to make history, but Marcus Smith forced the ball away to settle for a draw. There was a chilling combination of boos and applause. No one quite knew what to think of it.

Will Stuart’s first two tries for England inspired his side to a thrilling return to Twickenham

From England’s perspective, it was rugby’s equivalent to the Scrapheap Challenge. The first 70 minutes were nothing short of a car accident. They looked like a team that had been run over by the New Zealand team bus as they arrived, but they went on to carry out a remarkable rescue operation.

Why did they wait so long? Why did they only come out of their straitjacket when victory was out of reach? Closing exchanges, when Marcus Smith had venom coursing through his veins, were a model of what England can do when allowed to go wild.

Midway through the second half, frustrated corners of the crowd made jokes about Warren Gatland moving from the Amazon TV box to the England coaches box. They were cracking down on mistakes and poor discipline from when England conceded their first penalty after 40 seconds.

‘I will have it!’ shouted Ellis Genge, before flying off the line in an offside position to land a shot on Sam Whitelock. They had called it ‘big boy rugby’ and it was a baptism of fire for young scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet. His slow pass from the back of the lineup was intercepted by flanker Dalton Papali’i, who charged flawlessly to score a try giveaway.

England stocks were crashing faster than the cryptocurrency. Lined up against Tyrel Lomax, who has a 10kg weight advantage, Genge was penalized for leaning into the scrum. Brodie Retallick claimed the lineout and the visiting field piled in to push Codie Taylor for a second down in nine minutes.

All Blacks scrum-half Aaron Smith enjoyed life, prompting the hosts to give them ‘easy outs’ whenever the hosts received the ball. Mathieu Raynal conceded a penalty from the penalty spot against England strikers, Owen Farrell, on the day of his 100th cap, losing his temper with the officials the whole time.

Jones admitted his side were pulverized in the first half, lucky they weren’t further behind after Rieko Ioane and Jordie Barrett both missed scoring chances. England wasted their chances for so long. Jonny Hill fumbled the ball, they missed kicks to touch it and were returned to the maul and the breakdown. All England had to show from the first half was three points from Farrell’s boot.

‘Is there anything we can do better?’ Farrell asked Mathieu Raynal as they walked down the tunnel for half-time, having scored his team’s only half-time points. The French referee resisted the chance to make a cheap gag.

Farrell received ankle treatment during the break and handed kicking duties to Marcus Smith, who scored the opening points of the second half. There was a flash of tempo and physicality as Manu Tuilagi burst into the All Blacks red zone, but the game ended with a penalty against Maro Itoje for locking.

English frustration was there for all to see. Smith usually expresses himself with chicken steps and kicks, but at one point drew his opponents into scuffles against the ball.

And after 50 minutes, England were defeated by a masterpiece. Sam Simmonds had the ball dislodged from his grip and the tourists attacked from deep within their own halves. Beauden Barrett sent a kicking pass to Caleb Clarke, who transferred the ball to Ioane to charge clear to score across Twickenham. It was like watching the All Blacks of yesteryear.

Except these aren’t the All Blacks of old. It’s not the ruthless men in black whose jerseys were as powerful as armor. New kids like Smith, Freddie Steward, Dave Ribbans and Will Stuart didn’t buy into the stories told by their elders.

As time ticked away, Jones unloaded his bench and England played on instinct. Someone had sprinkled magic dust. After a drop goal from Beauden Barrett, Steward stole the restart and Smith lifted his head to run between two forwards. Beauden Barrett held him back in the tackle, earning a yellow card, and Stuart just about got the ball tied up.

With a one-man advantage, England went wild, while the All Blacks gave a masterclass in how not to close a game. England came out of their tactical straitjacket, running the ball from their own half, with the Ribbans pulling off a spectacular offload before Steward scored on the right wing.

And they kept coming, defying the odds. Henry Slade stepped in as third receiver, Mako Vunipola executed crisp lines, and Stuart blasted his way in to even the scores.

There was rowdiness and beer showers. Twickenham was on their feet, crying out for blood, buzzing with conviction, with an electric charge running through their legs. Their emotions had been thrown around like a Twickenham clothes dryer and they wanted the win. Smith had a chance to get the ball out of his 22 one last time, but suddenly that venom abandoned him and he tossed the ball into the stands for a bittersweet draw.

Freddie Steward gave England fans hope for an incredible late comeback as he crossed the line

At a time of increased demand for more affordable housing in Orange County, a Minneapolis-based developer recently closed land just outside the city limits of Apopka to build side-by-side communities with options lower rent.

On October 31, Dominium Development paid $4.7 million for 37 acres along Plymouth Sorrento Road, near the State Road 429 and State Road 515 interchange, where it will place 492 apartments in two separate projects. along the northwest shore of Standish Lake.

The Mira would provide 312 workforce housing units while The Waters would be an age-restricted community with 180 units.

The Orange County Commission approved the land use change for the project in July, rezoning it from its original agricultural designation as part of a rural citrus district to a planned development with residential density mean.

The commission also approved 14 variances at the time, including a reduction in the setback to 75 feet for single-family properties and an increase in building height to four stories for the seniors’ residence component.

“I’m really excited about this project,” County Commissioner Christine Moore said at the July 12 meeting. “It’s so necessary. …As soon as this community hears about four stories overlooking Standish Lake on a hill, it will fill up on the first day it opens for applications. It’s a nice project.

She just wishes these communities could start accepting tenants sooner.

Matt Hodges, Dominium’s development associate, said GrowthSpotter construction is expected to begin by the third or fourth quarter of 2023, with a certificate of occupancy expected 23 months after construction begins. Renders are not yet available.

“It’s still a total of two years before they’re ready to move in,” Moore said at the reunion. “Anything we can do internally to expedite these processes and projects would be helpful.”

The county is exploring policy changes to expedite the county’s review process for multifamily projects.

In unincorporated Orange County, 8,456 apartments are currently under construction while another 17,914 are in the pipeline pending final approval.

At the July meeting, County Mayor Jerry Demings responded to criticism from residents who feel the county is approving too many residential development projects.

“We have people continuing to move in and we have a housing deficit, especially housing designated as affordable or accessible,” he said. “We need to make sure we are responsive to the emerging housing crisis that we have.”

Orange County needs about 55,000 more apartments by 2030 to meet demand, according to the Florida Apartment Association.

In September, the commission unanimously approved an updated action plan through fiscal year 2024-25, estimated to create 2,550 additional affordable housing units in the Orlando metro area. At that time, the average monthly rent was $1,810, which represents a 30% increase over one year.

A report released Friday by rent.com said annual statewide rents rose 23.2% in Florida and remained high despite a nationwide cooling trend. Overpriced metropolitan area markets include Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Tampa, North Port-Bradenton, Orlando and Deltona-Daytona Beach, according to the report.

Dominion, a developer of high quality affordable housing, is working to improve this data. The company, which currently manages 38,000 apartments in more than 220 properties across the United States, is set to supply the Orlando market with an additional 1,500 affordable units in four new projects.

Two age-restricted communities are under construction in Osceola County, including the 331-unit Heron Ridge, which is slated to open soon, and the 383-unit Osprey Park near Poinciana, which is slated to begin welcoming tenants from by summer 2023, according to the company. website.

Dominium Development is currently building Osprey Park near Poinciana. It is expected to start welcoming tenants by summer 2023, according to the company's website.

In Orange County, the company is planning a 288-unit 62-plus-unit community called Sandpiper Glen on the south side of East Colonial Drive in Orlando, just east of State Road 417 and a short distance drive southwest from the University of Central Florida. This is expected to open in the spring of 2024, according to the website.

The land transaction for the Apopka project was brokered by Capstone Land Sales, who represented the sellers, Wayne and Susie Simpson.

Devon Quist, the company’s development associate, told GrowthSpotter in January that each of the units will serve tenants earning 60% or less of the area’s median income.

A concept plan by Bessolo Design Group shows The Waters seniors’ community would have 72 one-bedroom, 80 two-bedroom and 28 three-bedroom units. While a unit breakdown for the Mira is not included in the plans, some of the property’s 14 apartment buildings, surrounding a pool and playground, would include four-bedroom units.

The Orange County Commission approved the land use change for the Apopka project in July, rezoning it from its original agricultural designation as part of a rural citrus district to a planned development with a density average residential.

“Dominium has a long history of developing quality affordable housing and is a perfect fit to bring its product to this location in Apopka,” Brian Hunsicker, senior adviser at Capstone, said in a statement. “With the continued need for affordable housing and the incredible growth of the submarket, it’s great to see this project taking shape that will serve hundreds of households for years to come.”

The project joins a host of others in the pipeline for the Apopka region. The city has more than 85 development projects under construction, approved or under consideration, including several in its downtown area.

“Apopka has seen a burst of growth over the past few years,” Hunsicker, who has been involved in several transactions in the region, added in a phone call. “And there is apparently no end in sight. There is always a huge demand for apartments.

Summit County Democrats will elect the last — and last — county board member on Saturday, less than a month after Doug Clyde retired.

The East Side Democrat quit Summit County Council on Nov. 2, launching a process for the political party to appoint either Snyderville Basin Planning Commissioner Thomas Cooke or City Planning Commissioner town of Coalville, Tonja Blonquist Hanson, to fulfill the remainder of Clyde’s term.

The Democratic Party’s central committee, made up of more than 100 delegates, will meet at Ecker Hill Middle School to meet the candidates, ask questions and select a replacement. The top winner will hold the county council seat until the term expires in 2025.

Cooke and Hanson each said they are working hard to prepare for Saturday, including talking to constituency delegates, elected officials and others. They agree that it gave them the opportunity to listen and learn more about community concerns that they might not have considered.

The candidates acknowledged that they likely shared many of the same views on various issues, as both have experience on planning commissions in Summit County. Topics such as traffic, affordable housing, regional collaboration and development are key topics for Cooke and Hanson.

But Cooke, a Park City resident for nearly 30 years, and Hanson, who was born and raised in Coalville, expect to be somewhat different in their approach — or where it’s centered.

Snyderville Basin Planning Commissioner Thomas Cooke is seeking the vacant seat on Summit County Council.

Cooke served for nearly six years on the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission and has lived in Silver Summit since 2001. While working on projects such as the proposed development at the Tech Center site in Kimball Junction, known as of Dakota Pacific, Cooke said he realized the growth impacts will hit the West Side sooner than the rest of the county.

“I think the next two years for the greater Park City area and what’s happening at Kimball Junction is going to be deep in the future of what the county looks like,” Cooke said. “For me to have that experience over the past five years on the Planning Commission here would be an asset to the community.”

Meanwhile, Hanson, a fifth-generation Summit County resident, has a different perspective. She worries about how the East Side will be represented without someone from that side of the county on the panel. Clyde was the only member of the current county council to live in Eastern Summit County and his departure inspired Hanson to run for the vacant seat.

“Development is happening fast and furiously throughout the county and I’m not sure residents are aware of what’s going on,” she said. “They’re focusing on their area, which is important to do…but the amount of development that’s happening on the East Side is really scary. The numbers I hear, the expectation for the future is that in the next 15 to 20 years the population on the east side of the county will be larger than the Snyderville Basin.

Hanson continued, “What are the impacts of that? If you stop and think about this, you think traffic is bad between Kamas and Park City. Well, wait until all those people move to Kamas. Not to mention what is happening in Wasatch County around the Jordanelle and what that impact will be. This will be the biggest impact on our quality of life, this is the development that is coming.

That’s why Hanson wants to give a voice to the citizens of the East Side. She said it’s important that people feel like they have someone they personally know or can call and someone who understands their lifestyle and perspectives.

Coalville Planning Commissioner Tonja Blonquist Hanson will ask the Summit County Democratic Party to choose her to replace Doug Clyde, who left his seat on Summit County Council earlier this month.
Courtesy of Tonja Blonquist Hanson

“I think it’s really important that all citizens feel like they have fair representation,” Hanson said. “It’s not about east versus west in any way, because we as a county are all in this together.”

Cooke expressed empathy for the East Side over the number of “Park City people” on the county council, but said there was more to consider about a candidate than their address. He said the county council should, at some point, consider designating certain seats based on population or region rather than continuing to keep the general five.

If elected, Cooke plans to connect with the East Side and listen to their concerns. His No. 1 priority, he said, is to engage with the county’s community engagement plan to determine the community’s core values, which will guide future decision-making. He also wants to change the county’s general plan because it hasn’t received major updates since 2015.

“I have a personal belief that if we have a general plan that even allows projects like Dakota Pacific to be put on the table, which so many members of the public vehemently oppose, then there is something wrong with our plan. We shouldn’t spend 18 months looking at a project that no one wants – and that’s a planning issue,” Cooke said.

He also noted a sense of disconnect between the county council and the planning commission. Cooke said the panel was asked to fix the planning code in 2019 and a subcommittee spent the summer reworking it, held a public hearing, provided a recommendation and sent it to the county council. Nothing ever happened with the project, until last week when the Planning Commission held a working session to review the code and the group received the document, according to Cooke.

“There’s a bit of this circular firing squad where we’re being asked to do things,” he said, adding that the coronavirus pandemic and the Dakota Pacific project had contributed to the delays. “We have to be able to do more than one or two things at a time. I give a lot of credit to our current council because there is always something planned…but I also think that when you start doing something, you have to see it through to the finish line.

Hanson said she has been attending county council meetings since Clyde announced her intention to step down, which has given her insight into how members interact. She appreciates the thoughtful contribution of Clyde and outgoing County Councilor Glenn Wright, who did not stand for re-election. Democrat Canice Harte, former Snyderville Basin Planning Commissioner, is poised to win the election for Wright’s seat.

If chosen to replace Clyde, Hanson looks forward to bringing new ideas and a fresh perspective to the board, she said. She strives to continue Clyde’s work on water quantity and quality. She also wants to address affordable housing for the elderly population and plans to address voter concerns.

The Democratic Party central committee meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday. Voting will begin online shortly thereafter and will remain open until midnight. Katy Ownes, the party chair, expects the winner to be announced the next day. The County Council must then confirm the replacement.

(The Hill) — The U.S. housing market could be heading for a correction after more than two years of massive price growth that was more recently offset by the Federal Reserve’s attempt to rein in inflation by raising interest rates . The central bank effort led to a sharp rise in mortgage rates, a drop in the number of homes under contract and a record slowdown in monthly price growth in September of 2.6%.

A correction would allow buyers to spend more time on the market and possibly have less competition for homes, but experts say recent price cuts may not be enough to offset high mortgage rates combined with increases historic prices during the pandemic.

National housing market corrections are rare, economists told The Hill. Although there is no set definition, experts have said that the market is in a correction phase when changing conditions cause house prices to fall.

“We are seeing that now that home values nationally have fallen a bit from their June peak, this is part of a rebalancing of the housing market as potential buyers pull back due to soaring costs and that sellers respond by lowering their list price or accepting a lower offer on their home,” Zillow senior economist Jeff Tucker told The Hill in an email.

“But home values are nowhere near a 10% decline from peak levels nationally,” Tucker said, noting that a stock market correction refers to a decline of 10% or more. compared to peak levels.

Average home prices fell 0.4% in September to $358,283 from their June peak of $359,719, Zillow data showed.

Yelena Maleyev, an economist at KPMG Economics, told The Hill in an email that recent price declines can be viewed in the context of unusually rapid price growth over the past two years.

“Due to pandemic-related distortions, house prices have risen at a historically rapid rate over the past few years. This has led to many markets across the country being viewed as overvalued,” Maleyev said.

“According to Moody’s research, more than half of the country’s real estate markets are overvalued at the middle of this year. This leaves a lot of room for those markets specifically to see their home prices come back down to Earth,” she added.

Some of these price cuts have been seen in metros where prices have skyrocketed during the pandemic, and particularly those where remote workers have flocked to reduce the cost of living.

Data released last week by the National Association of Realtors showed home prices rose in most US metros in the last quarter. Seven of the top 10 metros with the highest price increases were in Florida, where the typical price increase was more than 18%, and half of the country’s most expensive markets were in California.

Nationally, prices for an existing median-priced single-family home rose 8.6% from a year ago to $398,500, despite the current price downturn.

Although buyers are seeing some relief after a slight drop in prices, soaring mortgage rates continue to put homeownership out of reach for many Americans.

Since the Federal Reserve began its series of aggressive interest rate hikes, mortgage rates have more than doubled. The rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose above 7% again last week after falling slightly a week earlier.

These rates are driving up payments, and recent data shows average monthly mortgage payments are up nearly 50% from pre-pandemic levels.

Average monthly payments increased by more than $600, bringing the monthly payment for a typical single-family home to $1,840 after a 20% down payment.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell told reporters following the central bank’s latest interest rate hike earlier this month that the agency was aware of the negative impact of the activity of the Fed on the real estate market.

“Housing is significantly affected by these higher rates, which are really back to where they were before the global financial crisis. They’re not historically high, but they’re much higher than they’ve been,” Powell said. “We understand that this is really where a very important effect of our policies lies.”

High rates also mean that a price correction may not be of major benefit to buyers for two main reasons, Taylor Marr, deputy chief economist at property firm Redfin, told The Hill.

“The first is that any decline in home prices so far has yet to fully offset the rise in mortgage rates, leaving homebuyers’ monthly mortgage payment still much higher than when rates were lower in the beginning. of the year,” Marr said in an email.

“If home values start to fall enough to offset rising rates, buyers will also be deterred from buying a home that is falling in value – no one wants to catch a falling knife and risk being the biggest fool” , he added.

Still, there could be a silver lining for buyers, even if high mortgage rates offset some of the positive effects of lower prices.

“This small price drop does not help buyers break through. The impact of higher mortgage rates far outweighs the impact of slightly lower prices,” Tucker said.

“The silver lining for buyers is reduced competition rather than anything related to the cost of a home,” Tucker added. “Buyers who can overcome affordability hurdles and stay in the market will have less competition and more time to consider their options, which is a dramatic change from last year when the auctions were the norm.”

England suffered a shock semi-final defeat as Samoa won a golden point thriller to set up a meeting with Australia in their first World Cup final.

Stephen Crichton’s drop-goal saw the England players crumble to the ground after the teams could not be separated after 80 minutes.

The host nation beat Samoa 60-6 in the tournament opener less than a month ago, but Matt Parish’s side got sweet revenge at the Emirates Stadium.

Stephen Crichton’s second try had seen the Pacific Islanders lead 26-20 in a thrilling final before Herbie Farnworth’s second try and a Tommy Makinson conversion extended the competition.

Samoa’s victory sees them become the first team other than Australia, New Zealand, England and Great Britain to reach the tournament final in the last 50 years.

A crowd of 40,489 gathered at the home of Arsenal Football Club, a far cry from the traditional heart of northern rugby league, largely expecting Shaun Wane’s side to show dominance after having swept away all of his previous opponents.

But several unusual errors in both defense and attack saw them come undone against a ruthless Samoa side who showed great determination and were clinical in attack.

Tim Lafai’s try was an early indicator of what was to come as the highly motivated Pacific Islanders took the game to England who fell behind for the first time in the tournament.

The 31-year-old Salford center spent 2021 working as a builder after being released by the Canterbury Bulldogs, but clawed back Jarome Luai’s pass and dodged Kallum Watkins and Dom Young to cross into the left corner .

At times the aggression boiled over, with Samoa captain Junior Paulo sent to the trash for a dangerous tackle on George Williams. And it was the Warrington Wolves half-back’s searing run between the tacklers that dispatched Whitehead as the host nation responded.

England’s vulnerable right edge was exposed for the second of three occasions when model Ligi Sao saw him slip past Watkins.

Yet the contest appeared to have swung back in England’s favor when John Bateman’s try saw the hosts reclaim the lead only to then be at the end of a superb Samoa side try as Crichton moved over. above.

Farnworth’s power brought the hosts within reach as he held back three tackles and Makinson’s conversion and penalty secured a grandstand finish.

England below

England looked imperious in their quarter-final victory over Papua New Guinea just a week ago, but the concession of two tries in the first half and the frailty of the Young axis -Watkins, previously formidable, suggested that all was not well.

Young’s missed catch and exit from the defensive line contributed to Lafai’s second try of the game, while Crichton’s second of the game came courtesy of an interception of Victor Radley’s pass with England in the ‘ascending.

A lack of composure during England’s attacking sets saw several misplaced passes replace the set routines that had served them so well before.

While Watkins’ failure to score a good chance in the first half was unfortunate, a late forward pass from captain Sam Tomkins saw them pay the ultimate price for their mistakes.

England: Tomkins, Young, Watkins, Farnworth, Makinson, Welsby, Williams, Burgess, McIlorum, Hill, Whitehead, Bateman, Radley.

Trades : Knowles, Thompson, Cooper, McMeeken.

Samoa: Suaalii, To’o, Crichton, Lafai, T. May, Luai, Milford, Hunt, Brown, J. Paulo, Sao, Su’a, Kaufusi.

The smell of food is in the air. It’s time to gather around the dinner table. He looks amazing. The heads of the family have really outdone themselves this year. The full broadcast is exposed. Smiles on everyone’s faces as they start digging. You take your plate deciding what you would like to serve first. A slice of turkey? Oh, there’s also ham, SCORE! Stuffing looks great, mashed potatoes are always a staple. The cranberry sauce is still in box form, so it’s a little weird. As you grab a roll, something catches your eye and you accidentally say out loud, “What are noodles?

I almost made the first Thanksgiving I spent with my in-laws very awkward. My wife is half Asian and having some sort of chow mein is something they have included on every vacation. This and the fact that his sister offered me seaweed (dried like jerky) as if it were a treat still fills me with confusion. I’m curious if chow mein is the weirdest non-traditional side dish, so I reached out to Yakima’s audience, and here are the results.

Amy Rock, rock mashed potatoes, gravy stuffing and buns. The only thing that stood out to me, “Green bean casserole”. A quick Google search and it’s a baked dish”composed mainly of green beans, cream of mushroom soup and fried onions.“But it’s also a popular Thanksgiving side dish according to google.” Although, if you’re not used to it, it does seem a bit unusual.

Evan Neveu enjoyed a lovely Thanksgiving »Meatloaf”. I asked if he used ground turkey instead of beef for Thanksgiving. His answer seemed to sum it up. “Once!

Kris Zerby commented on how his family is doing “Not turkey fans, so I make a big bone in ham with a cherry glaze on top.“I’ve seen a lot of hams, but cherry glaze is new to me.

Annie Piel is on the same wavelength with glazing but uses a “Blueberry Pepsi Frostingon his ham.

Ondrea Machin enlightened me on a side dish her family loves called “corn pudding”. It contains corn, creamed corn, cheese and is topped with a Ritz cracker crust and is also called “scalloped corn”. Has anyone informed the “corn kid”?

Stephanie DeMoss keeps the sides, but replaces the main course. “Since the start of the pandemic, my husband and I started our own tradition of barbecuing steaks instead of getting a bird. We still have all the potatoes and stuffing etc. Just a good steak and a lot less work and cleaning from the barbecues.

Growing up on the West Side near the beach, Laurie Stephenson’s family fashioned to include oysters in many of their meals, including Thanksgiving with “Oyster stuffing”.

On the Thanksgiving side, Emily Harris shared the best dip ever (according to her). Cranberry Jalapeño Dip! Cranberries, green onions, jalapenos and cream cheese make up the majority of the ingredients in this pre-turkey dip.

Several people have suggested Mince Meat Pie, but the more I think about it, the more flashbacks I have of Sweeney Todd.

Darrell Iness is going very, VERY tradition with his Thanksgiving. Including fried bread or bannock on the side.

Cindy Johnson’s side or topper might be a bit greedy. “I make what I call ‘Sweet Gravy’, it’s pretty much gravy, but I add sugar. I don’t think my family likes it very much, but it means more to me!

Republican nominee JD Vance, who received the endorsement of former President Trump in a crowded primary race earlier this year, was expected to win the Ohio Senate race on Tuesday.

Both NBC News and ABC News called the race.

Vance beat 20-year-old Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), who represents Akron and Youngstown, and made the contest surprisingly close by appealing to swing voters in eastern Ohio.

Trump played a key role in the race by endorsing Vance in the Republican primary, where he came from behind to defeat former state treasurer Josh Mandel and businessman Mike Gibbons.

Vance, the author of the best-selling book ‘Hillbilly Elegy’, was stuck in single digits in the polls and in third place before storming to the front of the pack in the primary, buoyed by Trump’s endorsement and the damage Mandel and Gibbons inflict on each other from personal attacks.

Vance has criticized Trump in the past, telling interviewer Charlie Rose in 2016 that he was “a Never Trump guy” and “never liked him.”

But Vance decided to embrace Trump in the primary and praised him in April as “the best president I’ve ever had.”

Trump reveled in Vance’s turnaround.

“JD kisses my ass; he wants my support so badly,” Trump joked at a recent campaign rally in Youngstown.

Vance, who was a vocal critic of former President Trump in the past, embraced him wholeheartedly during his Senate campaign. (Associated Press)

Vance fired on other Republican leaders and embraced Trump’s bogus allegations of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

“I think the fundamental problem is that we made a massive effort to move the election by very powerful people in this country,” he told Spectrum News in January. “I don’t care if you say it’s faked, if you say it’s stolen, like, I’ll say what I say about it.”

He said at a rally with Trump in April that “we have ridiculous leadership, even on the Republican side, trying to undo some of the best things Donald Trump has done in the last four years.”

Vance declined to commit to voting for Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) When asked about a possible Senate leadership race at a Fox News town hall event, saying only, “We’ll see what what will happen when I get to Washington, DC”

McConnell, however, raised millions for Vance through an aligned super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund, which poured more than $30 million into the Ohio Senate race.

Another McConnell-affiliated group, One Nation, announced a $3.8 million multi-week ad buy in August to help Vance.

The influx of spending from outside groups helped offset Vance’s lackluster fundraising performance.

The Ohio Senate race remained tight for much of the fall, but Vance widened his lead in the days leading up to the election. (Associated Press)

Vance raised $12.8 million during his Senate campaign while Ryan raised $48.1 million, according to the most recent public data released online by the Federal Election Commission.

The fundraising gap drew criticism from Republican strategists in Washington who questioned why Vance wasn’t raising more money and doing better in the polls.

The race was close to a tie for much of October, with the two candidates statistically tied, according to an average of polls compiled by RealClearPolitics.

Vance appeared to widen his lead in the final week of the campaign with polls from the Republican-leaning Trafalgar Group and Democratic-leaning Data for Progress both showing Vance ahead by 10 points.

He pledged last week to accept the result of the Ohio race, which he expected to win.

“I expect to win,” Vance said at a Columbus town hall event. “But of course, if things don’t go to plan, I will support the guy who wins and try to be as supportive as possible, even accepting that we are going to disagree on some big issues.”

My favorite memory from my time at the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance, a local non-profit organization focused on protecting our drinking water, is a postcard from the early 2000s showing an aerial view of a large parcel of land in the north side of San Antonio, devoid of any vegetation.

“Greetings from San Antonio: Gem of the Texas Hill Country,” reads the postcard, satirically labeling the development “Obsceno Ridge” on the back.

I love how this map satirizes North San Antonio’s scorched earth development pattern above and upstream of the Edwards Aquifer recharge area, where seemingly endless acres of new concrete and asphalt channels runoff into our drinking water supply. This type of development also frequently destroys wildlife habitat, while providing people with parks that are little more than postage stamps of grass with power lines underneath.
