9 Bizarre and Untraditional Thanksgiving Side Dishes in Washington

The smell of food is in the air. It’s time to gather around the dinner table. He looks amazing. The heads of the family have really outdone themselves this year. The full broadcast is exposed. Smiles on everyone’s faces as they start digging. You take your plate deciding what you would like to serve first. A slice of turkey? Oh, there’s also ham, SCORE! Stuffing looks great, mashed potatoes are always a staple. The cranberry sauce is still in box form, so it’s a little weird. As you grab a roll, something catches your eye and you accidentally say out loud, “What are noodles?

I almost made the first Thanksgiving I spent with my in-laws very awkward. My wife is half Asian and having some sort of chow mein is something they have included on every vacation. This and the fact that his sister offered me seaweed (dried like jerky) as if it were a treat still fills me with confusion. I’m curious if chow mein is the weirdest non-traditional side dish, so I reached out to Yakima’s audience, and here are the results.


Amy Rock, rock mashed potatoes, gravy stuffing and buns. The only thing that stood out to me, “Green bean casserole”. A quick Google search and it’s a baked dish”composed mainly of green beans, cream of mushroom soup and fried onions.“But it’s also a popular Thanksgiving side dish according to google.” Although, if you’re not used to it, it does seem a bit unusual.


Evan Neveu enjoyed a lovely Thanksgiving »Meatloaf”. I asked if he used ground turkey instead of beef for Thanksgiving. His answer seemed to sum it up. “Once!


Kris Zerby commented on how his family is doing “Not turkey fans, so I make a big bone in ham with a cherry glaze on top.“I’ve seen a lot of hams, but cherry glaze is new to me.

Annie Piel is on the same wavelength with glazing but uses a “Blueberry Pepsi Frostingon his ham.


Ondrea Machin enlightened me on a side dish her family loves called “corn pudding”. It contains corn, creamed corn, cheese and is topped with a Ritz cracker crust and is also called “scalloped corn”. Has anyone informed the “corn kid”?

Stephanie DeMoss keeps the sides, but replaces the main course. “Since the start of the pandemic, my husband and I started our own tradition of barbecuing steaks instead of getting a bird. We still have all the potatoes and stuffing etc. Just a good steak and a lot less work and cleaning from the barbecues.


Growing up on the West Side near the beach, Laurie Stephenson’s family fashioned to include oysters in many of their meals, including Thanksgiving with “Oyster stuffing”.

On the Thanksgiving side, Emily Harris shared the best dip ever (according to her). Cranberry Jalapeño Dip! Cranberries, green onions, jalapenos and cream cheese make up the majority of the ingredients in this pre-turkey dip.


Several people have suggested Mince Meat Pie, but the more I think about it, the more flashbacks I have of Sweeney Todd.

Darrell Iness is going very, VERY tradition with his Thanksgiving. Including fried bread or bannock on the side.


Cindy Johnson’s side or topper might be a bit greedy. “I make what I call ‘Sweet Gravy’, it’s pretty much gravy, but I add sugar. I don’t think my family likes it very much, but it means more to me!
